FAQ
BEFORE YOUR WORKSHOP
What should I wear?
Whatever you like! People sometimes turn up braced for mess, but it really isn't that kind of workshop. Just wear something comfortable.
What time should I arrive?
Come five or ten minutes before the start time if you can. It gives you a chance to settle in, say hello, and choose your colours without feeling rushed. Everyone always wishes they'd had a bit longer at the colour table.
How long does the workshop take?
Around two hours. Some people finish sooner, some like to take their time, and that's absolutely fine.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just yourself. I bring the lamps, the glass, the patterns, the glue and all the tools. Everything is included in your seat.
Can I come on my own?
Of course, and plenty of people do. You'll be sitting at a table with others who are just as new to it as you are, and conversation tends to happen all by itself. Come with a friend or come solo, both work beautifully.
What if I'm running late?
Please just let me know. I'll get you set up and caught up when you arrive. It's a relaxed room, not a lecture, so you won't have missed anything you can't pick up.
ON THE DAY
I have no artistic ability or skill. Are these workshops meant for artists?
Not at all. These lamps are so easy to make, even children are allowed to attend. Each one will be unique. I have thirteen colours of glass and all the patterns. You will go home with a unique lamp, made with your own creativity. Not a creative person? That's okay! Just follow one of the tried and tested patterns. You'll be amazed at what you can create in under two hours.
Can I change my lamp choice at the workshop?
Of course! You can upgrade or swap out your choice at the workshop, if I have other available lamps with me that day. Any changes or trades are subject to availability.
Are these family friendly events I can bring my children to?
Children 8 years old and up are welcome to attend. Your child will be gluing small pieces of mosaic glass onto a base glass bowl that is a component of the larger lamp. Please use your own discretion around if your child has the skill set and attention span to withstand this. Most children do just fine. Children must have a caregiver or guardian with them when they attend the workshops as there will be no additional supervision on-site to mind your child.
YOUR LAMP
How big are the lamps?
Great question! Here's the size of each lamp so you can picture it in your space:
-
- Hanging Lamp: 20cm (7.9in) tall × 13cm (5.1in) wide
- Table Lamp: 27cm (10.6in) tall × 13cm (5.1in) wide
- Lantern Lamp: 27cm (10.6in) tall × 11cm (4.3in) wide
- Swan Lamp: 40cm (15.7in) tall × 22cm (8.7in) wide
- Crescent Moon: 39cm (15.4in) tall × 26cm (10.3in) wide
- Tea Light Holder: 9cm (3.5in) wide × 8cm (3.1in) tall
Every lamp is handmade, so tiny differences are part of the charm. Photos below show each style so you know exactly what you're making. ✨
What kind of bulb does my lamp take?
Your lamp takes a 6W E12 LED bulb. E12 is the standard candelabra size, so when it eventually needs replacing you can pick one up at any hardware store or order one online. Nothing specialty, nothing hard to find.
Here's the full electrical detail:
-
- Bulb: 6W E12 LED
- Voltage: 110V
- Plug: North American, fits a standard wall outlet
- Cord: 1.5m (about 5ft)
Your lamp plugs straight into the wall. There are no batteries to replace, and the LED runs cool, so the glass stays comfortable to touch.
What are the lamps made of?
The frame is iron and the shade is glass, with mosaic glass pieces and beads set into the surface. That's the traditional Turkish construction, and it's what gives the light its colour when the lamp is switched on.
The glass is what does the work here. When the bulb is off you see the pattern. When it's on, the whole thing throws colour across your walls and ceiling. That's the part nobody expects the first time.
